Both St Mirren and Rangers will be looking to return to winning ways when they lock horns at St Mirren Park in their Scottish Premiership Matchday 33 tie on Sunday afternoon with kickoff at 14:00.
St Mirren were left empty handed again in the Premiership when they fell to a 4-2 defeat to Motherwell at away last Saturday. They have now suffered back-to-back defeats in the division and have lost five of their last six league matches, while they head into the match off the back of a three-match losing streak in all competitions.
The poor form has them sitting in the 10th spot in the Premiership standings level on 36 points with ninth-placed Aberdeen, but are just three points behind the fifth-placed Motherwell. Therefore, a win on Sunday for the Saints would see them break into the top half before the league splits after the weekend.
However, St Mirren have suffered 10 defeats in their last 11 Premiership encounters against Rangers and it will take a miracle for them to get something out of the Sunday’s clash.
Rangers, though, have also been struggling recently and they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Braga last Thursday night in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie. They have now suffered three defeats in their last four games across all competitions, including the 2-1 home defeat to Celtic in the latest Premiership Old Firm derby.
The derby defeat saw the gap between themselves and the leaders Celtic increased to six points now and they will be hoping to reduce the gap heading into the final phrase of the campaign. It will be hard to see Celtic relinquish their lead now, but Rangers will need to bounce back and hope to stay closer to them just in case something happens.
Also, they need to build their confidence with a victory this weekend ahead of their Europa League quarterfinal second leg tie against Braga at Ibrox next week. The Gers have won all their last four league matches against the Saints and should be confident of bouncing back here.
