Southampton and Brentford reconvene for their rescheduled Premier League fixture on Tuesday night at St. Mary’s Stadium after their successes in the FA Cup on the weekend.
Southampton made into to the fourth round of the FA Cup by seeing off Swansea City 3-2 victory in the extra time following a 1-1 draw at full time. Jan Bednarek gifted Swansea the lead in the 94th minute after putting the ball in own net, but Mohamed Elyounoussi made it 2-2 before Shane Long scored the winner in the 102nd minute, to send Swansea parking.
Back to the Premier League, this will be Southampton’s first top-flight action since December 21st when they drew 1-1 with Tottenham at home with James Ward Prowse and harry Kane scoring first half goals to share the spoils. They fixture against Newcastle on December 31st was called off due to Covid-19 cases and injuries at Newcastle’s camp.
Therefore the Saints open 2022 in Premier League against Brentford in an initially postponed match that was supposed to take place on December 16. Coming into the match the Saints will be confident of getting a positive result as they are unbeaten in their last three Premier League matches and are in a fine home form as they haven’t lost at St Mary’s in their last six matches.
Meanwhile Brentford booked a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup when they run out convincing 4-1 winners over Port Vale at away on Saturday with Bryan Mbeumo getting a second half hat trick to add on Marcus Forss’ first half goal, while Kian Harratt got the consolation goal for the hosts.
This will be Brentford’s second top flight fixture this year with the Bees opening the year at home to Aston Villa. Thomas Frank’s side showed great determination in that match coming from behind to secure a 2-1 victory on the day.
The win ended saw them bounce back from a three match losing streak in all competitions while also moving them into the 12th position in the league standings, having garnered 23 points from 19 matches. They are now two points and two places above their Tuesday hosts, who are in 14th place, which makes this fixture a close one as both sides will be in for the three points
