COSAFA cup tournament hosts South Africa will take on Mozambique in the second semifinal this Friday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium with kickoff at 18:00.
South Africa were the favorites of Group A and advanced to semifinals at the top of the group with 10 points in four matches.
Bafana Bafana started their COSAFA Cup 2021 campaign slowly with a narrow 1-0 win over Botswana thanks to Kagiso Malinga second half goal. They then proceeded to another 1-0 win against ten-men Eswatini in their second match before recording their most convincing victory in the third group match, hammering Lesotho 4-0 thanks Sepana Letsoalo hat-trick and Sphelele Mkhulise strike.
Bafana Bafana headed into their final group match on top group A and successfully sealed they confirmation of advancing to the last four with a 0-0 draw with Zambia on Wednesday. They now head into the semifinal full of confidence of advancing to the final on Sunday having not conceded in any of their group matches.
Mozambique on the other hand defied all odds to reach the semifinals following their unconvincing start to their campaign as they drew 0-0 with Zimbabwe in the opening match. Horacio Goncalves’ men then proceeded to losing 1-0 to Senegal in their second match leaving them in tough spot with only one point. However, they bounced back in an impressive fashion as they beat Malawi 2-0 in their third match.
Mozambique then traveled to their final group game with slim chances of advancing when they took on group leaders Namibia. Namibia were ahead of Mozambique with three points but were level in goal difference meaning any score line would have Mozambique leapfrog Namibia and break into the top two. Mozambique won 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Melque Alexandre that saw his nation advance to the semifinal against all odds. Now they take on the hosts South Africa with a finals spot up for grabs.
