Lazio will be travelling to face Sassuolo on Sunday, after having completed the formality of European progress in midweek.
The Eagles progressed as runners-up in their Europa League group, having previously defeated Sampdoria to sit eighth in the Serie A table.
They were held to a 0-0 draw with Galatasaray on Thursday, which denied them the opportunity to win at home and get to top spot in Group E, which would have guaranteed a direct place in the Europa League last 16.
Lazio will now turn their attention to the domestic football, having been set to face a playoff with one of the Champions League dropouts in February.
With their inconsistency under Maurizio Sarri, they had picked up just one point from their previous three league matches before travelling to face Sampdoria last weekend, and were at risk of losing pace in the top-four race.
Though midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic managed to score, he was later sent off on his team’s way to a 3-1 victory, Lazio’s first success in seven domestic away games.
Meanwhile, Sassuolo have won two of their last three league encounters with Lazio, with the gap between the two certainly narrowing recently.
However, Sassuolo have as well shown the same inconsistency as Lazio throughout this season, even losing grip on several matches during the course of the 90 minutes.
In fact, despite the Black and Greens gaining more points from losing positions than any other Serie A side this year, they have also lost 24 points when leading since end of 2020.
That trait was seen last Sunday as Sassuolo played out a 2-2 draw with Spezia, having previously held Napoli to the same score just days after a 3-1 victory over AC Milan.
Sassuolo have drawn three of their last four league games and are sitting 12th, having finished eighth in both of the past two seasons.
