Torino will be looking to build on their brilliant start to 2022 when they travel to Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Saturday evening to take on a struggling Sampdoria in their second Serie A action of this year, with kickoff at 17:00.
Sampdoria have had a difficult campaign this season with the club recording five wins, five draws and 11 defeats from their 21 league matches to collect 20 points, which have left them sitting in the 15th spot with just four points above the relegation zone.
Roberto D’Aversa’s side also made a poor start to second half of the season this year with the club opening 2022 with a 2-1 defeat to Cagliari, who had won just once before this season, at home on Jan 6th, before falling to 1-0 defeat to Napoli at away last weekend, with Andrea Petagna’s strike in the first half sealing the deal for Napoli.
That means that Sampdoria have now not won in their last four Serie A matches and with just four points keeping them adrift of the drop zone, the Ligurian side will be desperate for maximum points in this match and they might fancy their chances as they have not lost to Torino in their last three meeting at Luigi Ferraris, winning in all occasions.
Meanwhile Torino have been on and off this season but the club has certainly done well to collect 28 points from their 20 league matches and currently occupy the ninth spot in the standings with just four points from the European places and a match in hand.
Indeed Torino had their first match after the winter break postponed due to Covid-19 outbreak in their camp, and their subsequent match against Fiorentina delayed by 24 hours. Eventually they took to the field their first game of 2022 earlier this week and Ivan Jurisic’s men certainly made the made most of fresh legs as they edged Fiorentina in a 4-0 thumping at home, in a match that many saw them as underdogs following Fiorentina’s recent form.
It was a result which confirms Torino as both a more stable and effective proposition under Juric – who previously led modest Verona to successive top-half finishes and with four points keeping them outside the top six Torino will be looking to make it back to back wins this year in the Saturday’s match as they aim at climbing up the table.
