Following an impressive start to the UEFA European Under-19 Championship at the weekend, France Under 19 aim to put one foot in the semi-finals by defeating Romania Under 19 on Tuesday.
The teams meet in the southern Slovakian town of Dunajska Streda, with the Romanians looking to make up lost ground after losing 2-1 to Italy on Group A’s opening day.
Followind a delay of two years, the latest edition of the Under-19 Euros kicked off on Saturday, as France took on competition hosts Slovakia in the first game of the finals.
After going a goal down inside the first 15 minutes, the Slovakians were simply seen off by their French counterparts, as Loum Tchaouna’s early goal set the ball rolling.
Having kicked off the competition in style, Les Bleus now tackle the second of three group matches in the space of just seven days, as they set a course for the final that takes place on July 1.
Landry Chauvin’s side’s next generation have already shown they can perform collectively, as following Saturday’s success, they have won seven of their eight matches since October.
Meanwhile, Romania’s dreams are perharps a little more uninspired, and there remains two objectives still within their grasp despite a first day defeat.
The top two finishers in both groups of the competition will not only advance to the semi-finals, but also automatically qualify for the 2023 Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia, along with the winner of a playoff between the third-placed sides in each group.
Considering that, finishing fourth would be the worst record, so Friday’s encounter with Slovakia could prove crucial if they lose in midweek.
Romania could even have secured a valuable point from their game against Italy, who eventually took control of events, condemning Tricolorii to a third defeat in their last five matches.
