Campeonato Brasileiro rivals Bragantino and Avai have an encounter at Nabizao on Saturday, with both teams sitted mid-table and just one point above the relegation zone.

Bragantino put together a four-game unbeaten run in mid-june, featuring two wins and two draws, but they have stumbled recently having posted back-to-back defeats over the past fortnight.

The manner of Bragantinos’ 4-0 defeat away to Atletico Paranaense, when they were three goals behind before the half-hour mark, may well have had an effect on their fortunes in Monday’s contest with Botafogo.

Going into the game tied on points with their conterparts from Rio de Janeiro, Braga failed to make the most of their dominance and went down to a 1-0 defeat.

As a result, Mauricio Barbieri’s side now sit 14th in the Serie A standings, and while remaining just six points behind an all-important top six place, Bragantino are perilously close to the drop zone with more than a third of the season played.

Avai have adapted to life in the Brazilian top flight relatively well following their promotion from Serie B, but they are yet to fully impose themselves away from home, having managed just one league victory on the road this season.

After successive defeats, Bragantino may make changes to the squad on Saturday, but midfielder Eric Ramires will not be availabe to Barbieri due to suspension.
