The Spanish Super Cup comes to its conclusion this weekend with an intriguing final as Real Madrid takes on Athletic Bilbao at the King Fahd International Stadium in Saudi Arabia on Sunday night with kickoff at 21:30.
Both sides did well to navigate their way through difficult semi-final ties with real Madrid overcoming their arch-rivals Barcelona in an entertaining 3-2 victory in the first semifinal on Wednesday night. Federico Valverde’s effort in the 98th minute proving to be the difference in the five-goal thriller.
Los Blancos are the second most successful team in the history of this competition, lifting the trophy on 11 occasions, the last of which was in 2020, but they lost to Athletic in the semi-finals of last year’s tournament.
They are currently in a good form having only lost one of their last 19 matches across all competitions and are coming off a three-match winning streak. The capital giants will fancy their chances of lifting the trophy on Sunday as they have a good head to head record against their opponents and have already beaten Athletic twice this season in their league fixtures and have not lost to them since March 2015 in the league.
Meanwhile Athletic Bilbao came from behind to overcome Atletico Madrid with a 2-1 victory in the second semifinal on Thursday, with club needing just five minutes to pull off the comeback.
The Basque side have won the Spanish Super Cup on three previous occasions and are the reigning champions in the cup having beaten Barcelona 3-2 in the final of the 2021 competition.
They will be looking to make it back-to-back title wins on Sunday and they might fancy their chances as they are also in a good form having lost just one of their last six across all competitions and are coming off a four-match unbeaten run, claiming three victories in the run.
