Preston North End vs Birmingham City Match Analysis and Prediction

Preston North End will host Birmingham City at Deepdale on Saturday looking to extend their unbeaten Championship record to eight matches.

Meanwhile, the visitors are without a win at the second division in five matches, resulting in the club dropping into the relegation zone.

Much has been said of Preston recording five goalless draws in six Championship games, keeping the club away from the playoff mix so far.

However, Ryan Lowe will argue that foundations for a productive campaign have been laid, especially with a 1-0 victory over Coventry City being earned on Wednesday.

Emil Riis Jakobsen came off the substitutes’ bench to score the decisive goal, perhaps convincing the club’s owners to continue to reject any bids lower than their 10m euro valuation on deadline day.

Now sitting in 10th place in the table, just three points adrift of the league leaders, Preston now look ideally placed to become a force at the right end of the standings.

The clean-sheet run will inevitably come to an end at some stage, but there will be quite optimism that it can be extended for at least another game.

Birmingham have scored just four goals in seven league matches, two of which came in the same fixture against Huddersfield Town in their secong game.

Although their two goals since then have been against Watford and Norwich City, they remain with the second-worst attacking record in the division.

To add onto that, each of their league goals this season have come at St Andrew’s, putting more pressure on John Eustace to find a solution on their travels.

Birmingham City hierarchy have pulled off come good business in the transfer market, including securing the signing of Hannibal Mejbri from Manchester United, but the Blues’ fortunes will only improve if they become more productive in the final third.

Preston North End news

Preston North End are expected to be without Ben Woodburn after he twisted his ankle during the win over Coventry City.

Alan Browne is in line for a recall as a direct replacement, and Riis Jakobsen will hope to replace Ched Evans, with Alvaro Fernandez having to wait longer for his first Championship start.

Birmingham City news

Despite the level of performance against Norwich City last time out, Eustace may choose to freshen up his Birmingham XI, with Mejbri in line for his first start.

Alfie Chang could drop down to the substitutes’ bench, while George Hall may return for a three-man partnership in the centre of the pitch.

Prediction and Odds

Birmingham City have made some eye-catching signings in the summer and they may eventually have the chance to move themselves away from the relegation zone.

However, we cannot back against Preston North End, who we expect to claim a second win and eight clean sheet in succession in the Championship.
