Wigan Athletic vs Sunderland Match Analysis & Prediction
29/12/2022 10:45 pm
Wigan Athletic will be looking to claim their first win under new manager Kolo Toure when they host Sunderland in the Championship at the DW Stadium on Thursday.
While the Black Cats had a successful Boxing Day after beating Blackburn Rovers, Wigan are continuing to struggle at the foot of the second tier despite a change in management.
After a brave performance and subsequent point in Toure’s first game in charge against Millwall, Wigan supporters were looking forward to a new era at the club and targeting an ascent up the Championship standings.
However, the Latis have suffered successive defeats to Sheffield United and Middlesbrough, with the former Liverpool defender witnessing the enormity of the task he has taken on in Lancashire.
Wigan have now won just once in their last 11 league matches, a run that has seen them fall into the relegation zone, with an immediate return to League One after last season’s title win seeming a distinct possiblity.
Meanwhile, Sunderland have already played four Championship matches in December, as they aim to secure back-to-back promotions after they ended a four-year tussle with League One last season.
On Boxing Day, they fought back from 1-0 down to take maximum points against Blackburn Rovers, with Ellis Simms providing a 91st-minute winner off the bench at the Stadium of Light.
Over 40,000 home fans erupted when Simms managed to toe his strike past Thomas Kaminski into the Rovers’ net, with those of a Sunderland persuation now dreaming of a top-six finish in their first season back at this level.
