Wigan Athletic vs Stevenage Match Analysis & Prediction
24/09/2024 9:45 pm
Looking to extend their unbeaten run in the division to three matches, Wigan Athletic face Stevenage at The Brick Community Stadium on Tuesday in a League One encounter.
The Latics were forced to share the spoils away from home at the weekend, while Stevenage suffered a worrying defeat at Exeter City in Devon last time out.
A solid return of four points from their last two league matches has a llowed Wigan to move up to 14th position in the standings ahead of Tuesday’s contest, four points behind Licnoln City in the lowest of the playoff spots.
Wigan will be looking for a much-improved performance compared to their most recent match at their North-West home, with the Latics losing 2-1 to League Two side Morecambe in early September in the 2024-25 edition of the EFL Trophy, leaving their progress in the competition in the balance.
Taking charge of the club midway through their Championship relegation campaign of 2022-23, Shaun Maloney has been trusted with rebuilding Wigan on the pitch in the third tier, with the FA Cup winner set to take the managerial hotseat for the 80th time as Latics boss on Tuesday.
After missing out on a top-six spot by just five points last season, Stevenage are on a mission to go one step further this time around and secure a playoff berth, but they are currently struggling with major inconsistency at the beginning of the 2024-25 campaign.
Likely to be a rival in the playoff race, Barnsley were the opponents for Stevenage at the Lamex Stadium on September 14 and the latter secured a 3-0 victory over the Tykes, but Alex Revell’s side failed to build any momentum due to a sobering defeat on Saturday.
Boro did not record a single shot at Joe Whitworth’s net in Devon against Exeter at the weekend, with goals either side of the halftime break from Edward Francis and Kami Doyle securing a two-goal win for the midtable Grecians.
With all three of their competitive wins coming at their Hertfordshire base so far this season, Stevenage will bot be too confident of securing maximum points at The Brick Community Stadium on Tuesday, although Boro managed to beat Wigan at the venue back in January.
