Watford vs MK Dons Match Analysis & Prediction
13/08/2024 9:45 pm
In the first round of this season’s EFL Cup, Watford will play host to Milton Keynes Dons at Vicarage Road on Tuesday night.
Watford surrendered a two-goal lead against Millwall last Saturday when they conceded an 88th-minute equaliser, although Mileta Rajovic’s 90th-minute winner was enough to rescue all three points for the Hornets.
The result left the Hornets in fifth position in the very early Championship standings on Saturday, and manager Tom Cleverley will be hoping to better last season’s disappointing 15th-placed finish.
Watford were eliminated from the 2023-24 iteration of the EFL Cup after they lost on penalties in the first round against Stevenage on August 8.
In fact, Cleverley’s side have lost their last three matches in the competition, including against Milton Keynes Dons in 2022-23.
Milton Keynes Dons’ defeat against Bradford City was a fairly dull affair, with just three big chances produced between the sides.
Mike Williamson will be aware that dropping points so early in the season could be costly, especially given his side finished eight points behind Mansfield Town in third place last season, which is League Two’s final automatic promotion spot.
The Dons were knocked out in the first round of the EFL Cup last season after they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers on August 8.
Watford vs. MK Dons Head to head

Watford are expected to rest centre-back Mattie Pollock, who came away bloddied after a clash of heads against Millwall.

MK Dons Team News
MK Dons could line up with some of the substitutes who came on last time out, so the likes of Matthew Dennis and Tommy Leigh are expected to come into the XI.
The visitors are likely to start Alex Gilbey after he found the back of the net against Bradford.
