Vitesse vs NEC Nijmegen Match Analysis & Prediction
15/01/2023 2:15 pm
Vitesse will be looking to put some distance between themselves and the Eredivisie relegation zone when they host NEC Nijmegen at the GelreDome Stadium on Sunday.
While the hosts are in 14th place, just three points clear of the relegation playoff spot, the visitors are in ninth, four points clear of their opponents.
Vitesse’s defence has been their primary issue this season, having conceded 31 goals, averaging more than two in a game, the second-worst defensive record in the Eredivisie, behind only 17th-placed FC Volendam.
Geel en Zwart have not won in their last four league matches, although they have drawn three of these, two of which were against Ajax and AZ Alkmaar, so there are definitely some promising signs for head coach Phillip Cocu.
Against Alkmaar last time out, Vitesse left it late but picked up a point through an 87th-minute goal from Mohamed Sankoh, and the challenge will now be to back that up with what would be just a second home win of the season.
Meanwhile, NEC have lost just three of their 15 Eredivisie matches so far this season, but their league standing has been hampered by a seven-game run of draws extending from August to October, currently seven points off the top seven.
Their defence has been solid for the vast majority of the campaign, having conceded 17 goals, the fifth-best record in the league, although they have often had trouble down the other end of the pitch.
NEC have scored 20 goals in the Eredivisie, the second-lowest amount in the top half, but they have started to show improved signs in front of goal in their latest matches, beating Waalwijk 6-1 in their secon-most recent home game.
In their last seven competitive matches, Rogier Meijer’s side have lost only once, with this coming in a tough trip to PSV Eindhoven, while they have also won their last two away from home, most recently beating Almere City 4-0 in the KNVB-Beker.
Vitesse vs. NEC Nijmegen Head to head
In the previous 52 meetings between these two teams, Vitesse have claimed 23 victories while NEC have won 15, and they have drawn in 14. Vitesse have scored 67 goals and conceded 54 in the process.

Vitesse Team News
Vitesse enter the contest with a clean bill of health and Cocu has no reason to make too many changes to the side that impressed against Ajax last time out.
However, Sankoh may be be brought into the starting lineup after he scored in a nine-minute cameo last weekend, replacing Bartosz Bialek in the centre-forward role.
