Two nations battling it out for a top-two finish in Euro 2024 qualifying Group F meet on Tuesday night, as Sweden host Austria at Friends Arena in Stockholm.
The Swedes beat Estonia at the weekend to move within four points of their Austrian counterparts in the table, but defeat would leave them with a mountain to climb.
Sitting a distant third in Group F following two defeats from three, Sweden were just two points above hosts Estonia as they kicked off a crucial European Championship qualifying double-header in Tallin on Saturday.
However, securing a second 5-0 victory of the process revives the Blagult’s hopes of fighting back for a place in the top two, which would guarantee direct entry to the finals next summer.
As the post-Zlatan Ibrahimovic era continues, Sweden’s next generation of forwards all contributed to a first-half display that gave them a three-goal lead at the break, as Viktor Gyokeres, Dejan Kulusevski and Alexander Isak all found the net.
Blagult also dished out a 5-0 beating to Azerbaijan back in March, but defeats to Austria and Belgium – both without scoring – have left Sweden with plenty of work to do.
Having seen his side dispatch the group underdogs, Janne Andersson now leads Sweden into a potentially pivotal contest on Tuesday, when defeat would see them all but out of the running for a spot in Group F’s top two.
Meanwhile, Austria occupy second place in the standings and are level on 10 points with leaders Belgium at the halfway stage, which puts them firmly on course for a spot at a finals hosted by neighbouring Germany.
Beating Sweden in June’s reverse fixture is Austria most recent competitive game, and a late double from RB Leipzig midfielder Christoph Baumgartner at Ernst Stadion kept their qualifying destiny within their own hands.
Having extended their unbeaten run to a seventh game on Thursday, when they were held to a 1-1 friendly draw by Moldova, Das Team now resume their quest for a third straight Euros qualification.
German coach Ralf Rangnick is now finding his feet as Austria manager, after his reign had begun with just one win from six matches, and coming home with a point from a tough trip to Belgium certainly boosted morale in the camp.

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak will lead the line again against Austria, with Viktor Gyokeres his likeliest partner.
Dejan Kulusevski should therefore feature on the right side of midfield, and 82-cap Emil Forsberg – Sweden’s most experienced active player – starts on the opposite flank.

Austria Team News
Christoph Baumgartner, star striker Marko Arnautovic and captain David Alaba are among those set to start for Austria, having only made substitute appearance on Thursday.
However, Freiburg’s Michael Gregoritsch may expect to keep his place up front, following four goals in his last five international appearances, but clubmate Junior Adamu was not called up by Rangnick due to a knee injury.
