Stoke City vs Brighton & Hove Albion Match Analysis & Prediction

28/02/2023 10:15 pm

Stoke City play host to Brighton & Hove Albion at bet365 Stadium in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Tuesday night.
The Potters beat League Two sides Hartlepool United and Stevenage Town to reach this stage, while Brighton defeated Middlesbrough and the current holders Liverpool.
Stoke’s 1-0 defeat to Millwall on Saturday left them in 17th position in the table, nine points clear of the relegation zone and 13 points adrift of the playoffs.
Tuesday’s FA Cup tie against a high-flying Brighton side may take on additional emphasis for Alex Neil and his players, as they look to provide their fanbase with some excitement throughout the closing months of the season, as the club stares another season of lower mid-table mediocrity in the face.
The Potters have never won the FA Cup, but they did reach the final under Tony Pulis in 2010-11, eventually losing 1-0 to Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City as Yaya Toure’s late goal proved to be the difference between the two sides on that occasion.
Meanwhile, Brighton only have one FA Cup final appearance to their name, when losing 4-0 in a replay to Manchester United after drawing the first game 2-2 in 1983.
Considering they had finished bottom in the Premier League in the same season, it was a huge surprise that Brighton managed to reach that far in the competition.
Fourty years later, Roberto De Zerbi will sense a real opportunity to create history in what has proven to be a hugely successful campaign so far, with the Seagulls on course for their highest ever finish in England’s top flight.
With Middlesbrough and Liverpool both impressively eliminated in the previous round, De Zerbi will demand that his side do not stumble against an inferior opponent on Tuesday.
Stoke City vs. Brighton & Hove Albion Head to head
In the 19 previous meetings between these two teams across all competitions, Stoke have claimed 11 victories while Brighton have won once, and they have drawn in seven. Brighton have scored nine goals and conceded 30 in the process.
