St Polten Women vs Hammarby Women will only have pride to play for when they meet in Wednesday’s Women’s Champions League clash at Generalli Arena.
The two sides are unable to finish in the top two in Group D, with Manchester City and Barcelona set to progress to the quarter-finals.
Having lost all five matches in the main draw, St Polten are one of three teams yet to pick up a point in this season’s group stage.
They suffered a 2-0 defeat in their opening group match against Hammarby, before they gave up a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 to Manchester City in their second group game.
St Polten then experienced two difficult matches against reigning European champions Barcelona, losing 7-0 in the away game and 4-1 on home soil.
Unfortunately for the Austrian champions, another defeat followed in last week’s trip to England, as they suffered a 2-0 loss to Manchester City following second-half goals from Lily Murphy and Kerstn Casparij.
Meanwhile, Hammarby are preparing for the final game of a successful European campaign despite failing to make the quarter-final stage.
Their real achievement was reaching the main draw in their maiden UWCL campaign, overturning a 2-1 first-leg deficit in their qualifying tie with Benfica to secure their spot in the group stage with a 3-2 aggregate victory.
Unfortunately for Hammarby, they have been unable to make a significant impression in a tough group despite beginning the main draw with a 2-0 victory over St Polten.
They followed that result with four successive defeats in their home and away matches against Barcelona and Manchester City, conceding 16 goals and scoring just once in that period,
