Spezia vs Atalanta Match Analysis & Prediction
04/01/2023 4:30 pm
Atalanta will be looking to kick-start their campaign after a disappointing end to 2022 when they retur to Serie A action against Spezia on Wednesday.
Spezia have been used to prolonged winless runs this season, twice going at least five matches without success.
However, picking up four points from encounters with Udinese and Hellas Verona before the World Cup has moved them clear of the bottom three.
Luca Gotti will not be getting carried away with his side failing to prevail in successive league matches all season, but there have been signs for a while that one of the underdogs of the division had been improving.
Spezia had previously pushed Fiorentina and AC Milan all of the way, only failing to collect a point from each game due to goals scored in the 89th minute and beyond.
Having been left without European football this season, there had been the expectation that Atalanta may only get stronger before the World Cup given their longer rest time in comparison to many of their rivals.
However, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side lost four of their five matches before going into the break, resulting in the club dropping out of title contention and into sixth place.
Although they remain with one of the best away record in Serie A, Atalanta saw their six-game unbeaten record on their travels come to an end when they lost 2-1 at struggling Lecce on November 9.
While Gasperini will be confident of getting back on track on Wednesday, another setback would leave opne the possibility of his side being cut adrift from the teams competing for Champions League qualification.
Spezia vs. Atalanta Head to head
Atalanta have dominated in the only previous four meetings between these teams, winning on three occasions while they have drawn once. Spezia have scored four goals and conceded 11 in the process.
Spezia Team News
Spezia remain without first-choice goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski, who sustained a broken ankle during the victory over Hellas Verona last time out.
Jeroen Zoet will replace the Polish stopper between the sticks in what may be the only change made by Gotti for this game.
