Southampton and Manchester City will battle for a place in the last four of the EFL Cup when they face off at St Mary’s in the last quarterfinal tie on Wednesday night.
Both sides began their League Cup campaigns in the third round where Southampton need penalties to see out Sheffield Wed, while Man City put two goals past Chelsea to book a place in round four.
Southampton knocked out Lincoln City in the fourth round with a 2-1 home win, while City saw out Liverpool in a thrilling 3-2 home victory. Now both sides will be keen to book a place in the semifinals of the competition, and although, City are seen as hot favorites to win the Wednesday’s clash, Pep Guardiola must warn his men against complacency.
They are coming off back-to-back win over Chelsea in the Premier League and the FA Cup, thrashing them 4-0 in the last competition and will look to build on that as they seek to get close to another trophy.
Southampton have been poor in the Premier League, since the return of the league, but they are coming off a confidence-boosting 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup. They came from behind to win on the day and will be looking to build on that performance as they seek to cause a major upset on Wednesday.
