Southampton vs Lincoln City Match Analysis & Prediction
20/12/2022 10:45 pm
Southampton get back to competitive action on Tuesday when they play host to Lincoln City at the St Mary’s Stadium in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.
At a time when the Saints sit in 19th place in the Premier League table, Lincoln City travel to St Mary’s occupying 14th position in League One.
When Nathan Jones agreed to depart Luton Town for Southampton, he was aware that he would face just one match in charge before a lengthy break in action due to the World Cup.
However, the new Southampton head coach may have been content to have a bedding-in period, allowing him to prepare for an important six-month period for the club.
Sitting two points adrift of safety, Jones’ target is to avoid relegation from the Premier League, a division where the Saints have collected just five points from their last 10 matches.
Southampton even required penalties to progress into the last 16 of this competition, getting the better of Sheffield Wednesday after being held to a 1-1 draw by the League One giants.
While Jones’ side have recently enjoyed a training break in Spain, they have participated in no friendly matches ahead of the resumption.
Meanwhile, this competition provides Lincoln City with a chance to make amends after losing in the FA Cup to non-league Chippenham Town.
Since that defeat, Lincoln have suffered just one loss in seven games, a run which has included defeating Bristol City in the EFL Cup and Everton U21 in the EFL Trophy.
The postponement at the weekend has halted Lincoln’s momentum to certain degreee, although Mark Kennedy may have been content with an unexpected rest period ahead of the hectic schedule to come.
Although the Imps have won four of their 10 away matches in the third tier, their last two league fixtures on the road have ended in defeat to Port Vale and Shrewsbury Town respectively.
Southampton vs. Lincoln City Head to head
