Sheffield Wednesday vs Port Vale Match Analysis & Prediction
29/12/2022 10:45 pm
Sheffield Wednesday and Port Vale will go head to head at Hillsborough on Thursday, with both teams looking to build on Boxing Day victories.
While the hosts remain just two points outside of the top two in the League One table after beating Fleetwood Town on Monday, their visitors climbed to ninth place with a win over Morecambe.
Sheffield Wednesday enter the contest off the back of an important victory last time out, having previously failed to gain ground in the fight for automatic promotion in League One.
Darren Moore’s side firstly played out a goalless draw away at Derby County before salvaging a 1-1 stalemate against Exeter City through Callum Pterson’s injury-time equaliser.
They would then face Oxford United on home turf and come away with a point, and while those three draws did extend their unbeaten run to 10 matches in League One, it meant that they failed to move any closer to catching leaders Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich Town, as a two-point gap to second place remained.
The Owls made the trip to face Fleetwood Town on Boxing Day as they were trying to get back to winning ways, and they managed to come away with all three points through a 2-1 victory.
Meanwhile, Port Vale make the trip to Hillsborough having won three of their last four matches in League One and climbed into the playoff race as a result.
After earning promotion from League Two last season, Darrell Clarke’s side made a steady start to the new campaign, picking up 23 points from their opening 17 matches before suffering a 4-0 defeat to Oxford United.
However, they would quickly bounce back by a 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic through Daniel Butterworth’s goal on the hour mark, before claiming a 2-0 win away at league leaders Plymouth Argyle, as James Wilson scored two goals in a six-minute span in the second half.
Off the back of 1-0 defeat away at Bristol Rovers and Salford City in the league and EFL Trophy respectively, Clarke’s side again set out to return winning ways when they hosted Morecambe on Boxing Day, and they were successful in doing so, as Gavin Massey’s 40th-minute goal made the difference between the two sides.
