Santos Laguna vs Mazatlan Match Analysis & Prediction

24/11/2023 6:10 am

For the first time in club history, Mazatlan will be a part of the Apertura play-in round in Liga MX as they travel to Estadio Nuevo Corona to face Santos Laguna on Friday.
Both teams kept their Apertura hopes alive on the final matchday of the season, with Laguneros beating San Luis 2-0 while Canoneros defeated Toluca 1-0.
A late surge by Santos Laguna down the stretch of the Apertura campaign enabled them to sneak into ninth position, qualifying for at least the play-in round for a sixth successive time in the opening phase of this competition.
Their form in the first half of the season was largely underwhelming when compared to the previous campaign, finishing with 23 points, their fewest in the opening phase since 2017-18 (18).
Of those 23 points, 16 came at home, with this team claiming victory in three of their final four domestic matches at Estadio Nuevo Corona, outscoring their opponents 10-4 over that span.
To this point of the 2023-24 league campaign, Pablo Repetto’s side have been unusually poor defensively, finishing tied with Juarez for the most goals conceded in the Apertura this year (34), allowing 13 more strikes that they had given up in the opening round of the previous domestic campaign.
From one side that regressed last season, we have Mazatlan, who have made great strides in the Apertura this time around, claiming five more points (22) that they had at this same stage a year ago.
Ismael Rescalvo’s side were sparking down the stretch of the domestic campaign, winning four of their final five matches and scoring three or more goals in three of those games.
Mazatlan have picked up points in four away matches in the first half of the Liga MX season but squandered four points on the road when scoring the opening goal.
Santos Laguna vs. Mazatlan Head to head
In the eight previous meetings between these two teams, Santos Laguna have claimed five victories while Mazatlan have won two, and they have drawn once. Mazatlan have scored seven goals and conceded 14 in the process.
