Romania vs Slovenia Match Analysis & Prediction

17/11/2022 7:30 pm

An all-European international friendly takes place at the Cluj Arena on Thursday, as Romania play host to Slovenia.
Both sides failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar and now prepare for their penultimate matches of the calander year before attention turns to Euro 2024 qualification.
Romania’s defensive acumen ultimately counted for nothing in World Cup qualifying, where they finished one point adrift of a playoff spot and potential route to the 2022 competition.
They conceded just one goal in seven World Cup qualifying games between September and November and collected seven points from their final three matches, but they finished one point adrift of North Macedonia in third place in Group J to leave them without a World Cup appearance since 1998.
A similar period of agony befell Romania when they took to the pitch for the UEFA Nations League last month, where they were demoted back down to League C after finishing bottom of League B Group 3, level on points with Montenegro but succumbing to an inferior head-to-head record.
Approaching his fourth anniversary as Slovenia head coach, Matjaz Kek is yet to lead his country to a major tournament since taking charge, and they were forced to accept a fourth-placed finish in their World Cup qualifying group.
Slovenia have won just one of their eight matches since qualifying ended, but they have secured a second successive cycle of League B football in the UEFA Nations League after going unbeaten in their final four matches, drawing three of them.
Kek’s side will face Northern Ireland, Kazakhstan, Finland, Denmark and San Marino in their Euro 2024 qualifying period, and fixing a poor away form must be on the priority list for the Slovenia boss, whose side have won just one of their last 12 games and have gone winless in their last six.
Romania vs. Slovenia Head to head
These two nations have previously met on eight occasions across all competitions, where Romania have claimed three victories while Slovenia have won two, and they have drawn in three. Romania have scored 13 goals and conceded 10. Slovenia claimed a 4-3 home victory in their last meeting in a friendly.
