Real Oviedo vs Atletico Madrid Match Analysis & Prediction
04/01/2023 10:00 pm
Atletico Madrid will be looking to progress to the last-16 stage of the Copa del Rey when they travel to second-tier side Real Oviedo on Wednesday.
While the hosts have beaten Gimnastica Torrelavega and Granada in the opening two rounds, Atletico have overcome Almazan and Arenteiro to advance to this stage.
Real Oviedo have not progressed past the last-32 stage of the Copa del Rey since 2003, so it would be some story if they managed to navigate their way past Atletico to advance in this season’s competition.
The Blues have not actually been in action since the 1-0 victory over Granada, with their last league match being a 1-0 victory over Sporting Gijon on December 17.
Alvaro Cervera’s side are currently 14th in the Segunda Division table, picking up 27 points from their 21 games, which has left them six points outside of the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Atletico enter the contest off the back of a 2-0 victory over Elche on December 29, with Joao Felix and Alvaro Morata getting on the scoresheet.
That result has left the Red and Whites in fourth place in the table, two points behind third-placed Real Sociedad but just two points ahead of fifth-placed Athletic Bilbao on the same number of matches.
Diego Simeone’s side were eliminated in the round of 16 last season, and they have only won this competition on 10 occasions, with their last success coming back in 2012-13.
However, the Copa del Rey is likely to represent Atletico’s best chance of securing silverware this season, as they do not have European football in the second half of the campaign, having finished fourth in the Champions League group behind Porto, Club Brugge and Bayer Leverkusen.
Real Oviedo vs. Atletico Madrid Head to head
In the previous 17 meetings between these two teams across all competitions, Real Oviedo have claimed four victories while Atletico have won seven, and they have drawn in six. Atletico have scored 31 goals and conceded 21 in the process.
