Preston North End vs Luton Town Match Analysis & Prediction

15/02/2023 10:45 pm

Preston North End take on Luton Town at Deepdale in the Championship on Wednesday night, with both sides looking to get back to winning ways.
The hosts have lost their last three matches across all competitions, while the visitors are winless in two, having suffered a 3-0 defeat away to League Two side Grimsby Town earlier this month.
Preston have now been in poor form for quite some time, losing seven of their last 10 matches across all competitions, but they are still well within reach of the playoff spots.
Ryan Lowe’s side are 12th in the table, just six points adrift of sixth-placed Watford, while they also have a game in hand at their disposal, so they still have the opportunity to make a success out of this campaign.
However, their goal record is one thing that may need to change if they are to aim for the top six, considering they have scored the second-fewest amount of any team outside of the relegation zone.
Preston continued to struggle in front of goal in their last game, losing 3-0 away at Burnley, with Nathan Tella bagging a hat-trick to condemn them to yet another defeat.
The Lilywhites did manage to beat Luton in the reverse fixture back in August, with Brad Potts scoring the only goal of the game on that occasion, which should provide them with confidence heading into Wednesday’s contest.
After achieving an unexpected sixth-placed finish in the Championship last season, Luton are on track to do even better this time around, currently occupying fourth place in the league standings.
Given that Luton are 12 points behind second-placed Sheffield United, it would be a stretch to say that they are in contention for automatic promotion, but they are comfortably inside the playoffs, and could get another crack at reaching the Premier League.
A real advantage for the Hatters heading into the midweek is their fantastic away record this season, picking up 27 points on their travels so far, the joint-third highest amount, and just one less than league leaders Burnley.
However, Luton may be a little disappointed with their last result, drawing 1-1 away at Coventry City despite taking the lead, with Tom Lockyer’s first-minute goal being cancelled out by a Matty Godden penalty.
Preston North End vs. Luton Town Head to head
In the 29 previous meetings between these two teams across all competitions, Preston have claimed 17 victories while Luton have won eight, and they have drawn in four. Luton have scored 36 goals and conceded 44 in the process.

Preston will be without Ched Evans, who is serving the second match of his four-game ban following retrospective action from the FA.
Thomas Cannon was chosen to lead the line in Evans’ absence last time out, but he is yet to score in four games for the club, so Lowe may opt for Troy Parrott, who has now returned from injury.

Luton Town Team News
Marvelous Nakamba has impressed for Luton since arriving on loan from Aston Villa on deadline day, and he is likely to keep his place in midfield, playing alongside Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu.
Carlton Morris has not been in the best goal-scoring form recently, but he should lead the line again for the visitors, supported by Elijah Adebayo, who has scored five in his last eight games.
