Poland vs Faroe Islands Match Analysis & Prediction

07/09/2023 9:45 pm

Aiming to make up lost ground in European Championship qualifying Group E, Poland will be looking to secure maximum points on Thursday, when Faroe Islands visit Stadion Narodowy.
While the Eagles slipped up in Moldova last time out, leaving them adrift of group leaders Czech Republic, their Faroese conterparts sit rock-bottom with just a single point from three matches.
Losing to Czech Republic in their opening game put Poland behind in the expected battle for top spot, before a 1-0 victory over Albania at least saw them take something from the March international window.
Now managed by former Euros winner Fernando Santos, the Eagles then went on to beat Germany in a June friendly on home soil, before travelling to Chisinau to complete the supposed formality of turning over international underdogs Moldova.
Despite a strong start, which saw goals from Arkadiusz Milik and Robert Lewandowski apparently put them in control, Poland unaccountably unravelled after the interval, conceding three goals to their hosts, who snatched victory with an 85th-minute winner.
Therefore, the Eagles stand in danger of missing out on direct entry to Euro 2024 if they fail to steady the ship during this month’s get-together.
By contrast, victory in Warsaw would represent a real coup for the Faroe Islands, a nation that has never qualified for any major tournament and are likely to do do soon, given their relatively modest resources.
Sweden-born coach Hakan Ericson – who previously led the Faroes into League C of the UEFA Nations League and then pulled off a surprise victory over Turkey this time last year – has overseen one draw and two defeats in the first three matches of the qualifying campaign.
Faroe Islands are now winless in their last six matches all told, and having posted just one win from their last 17 Euros Qualifiers there are few signs they can cause an upset in Poland, ahead of Sunday’s encounter with Moldova in Tirshavn.

After overcoming a recent injury to feature in Serie A last weekend, first-choice goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny should start in goal, while Piotr Zielinski features in a likely three-man midfield.
Roma wing-back Nicola Zalewski was called up but has been instructed to remain in Rome by his club due to a thigh problem, possibly opening the door for Matty Cash to start.
