Penarol vs The Strongest Match Analysis & Prediction

15/08/2024 1:00 am

Penarol and The Strongest will meet in the Copa Libertadores round of 16 first-leg tie at Estadio Campeon del Siglio on Thursday.
Penarol ended second in Group G, but the Uruguayan side could have exited had they not won every group-stage match in front of their supporters.
They beat Caracas (5-0), Atletico Mineiro (2-0) and Rosario Central (2-1) on home turf, with their defensive strength seeing them let in one goal in three matches, a statistic that bodes well if continued in the knockout rounds.
On the contrary, Diego Aguirre’s side’s away record was underwhelming, with two defeats and a victory nearly costing the Uruguayan side their spot in the knockout stages.
With three goals scored and none conceded on their turf in their recent two home league matches, Aguirre will back his side to keep that run going against the Bolivian visitors.
While Penarol’s away results were below par, The Strongest’s were almost non-existent as they secure a solitary point from an available nine on their travels, notching a point at Huachipato.
Tigre relied on their equally unblemished record on home soil where they scored seven times and conceded none, and they go into the round of 16 first leg keen to return with a positive result that keeps the tie in the balance.
While the Group C winners head into the tie’s first game unbeaten in four since a 5-2 league defeat to GV San Jose, it remains to be seen if their poor away results from the group stage continue into the knockouts.
Ismael Rescalvo’s side have also had fewer days to recuperate and prepare for Thursday’s contest compared to their hosts, whose last game came on August 4 while the Bolivian side were last in league action four days later.
Penarol vs. The Strongest Head to head
In the previous eight meetings between these two teams, Penarol have claimed five victories while The Strongest have won two, and they have drawn once. The Strongest have scored six goals and conceded 20 in the process.

Penarol Team News
Maximiliano Silvera is Penarol’s undoubted leading match-winner, having scored five group-stage goals in six appearances, three more than Leonardo Fernandez’s two.
However, Fernandez’s creativity saw him set up three goals for teammates while fashioning four big chances, with Javier Cabrera – two assists, three big chances created – following closely behind.
