PAOK vs Viktoria Plzen Match Analysis & Prediction

24/10/2024 7:45 pm

Two teams still seeking their first win in the 2024-25 Europa League meet in Greece on Thursday night, as PAOK welcome Viktoria Plzen to Stadio Toumbas.
While Plzen have picked up just two points from their opening two matches in the league phase of the tournament, PAOK are yet to collect a single points.
PAOK are one of only six teams in the newly-expanded 36-team Europa League who have lost both of their opening two matches, with a 3-1 opening defeat to Galatasaray followed by a narrow 1-0 home loss to 10-man FCSB three weeks ago.
Razvan Lucescu’s side were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with AEK in the domestic league last weekend, with Baba Rahman’s early opener cancelled out before the half-hour mark by Frantzdy Pierrot, and neither side were able to find the winner during a tight contest in the Greek capital.
Competing in the Europa League for the first time in four years after reaching the quarter-finals in the Conference League last season, PAOK are seeking to improve their form in Europe’s secondary club competition, having won just one of their last 12 matches.
However, PAOK have lost just one of their last six Europa League matches on home soil – the aforementioned defeat to FCSB earlier this month – while they have won all three of their previous home encounters with Czech opposition, which bodes well ahead of their meeting with Viktoria Plzen.
Competing in the Europa League proper for the first time since the 2017-18 campaign, Viktoria Plzen have held their own in this season’s tournament, even though they are yet to taste victory.
Miroslav Koubek’s side scored two goals in the final four matches to rescue a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Eintracht Flankfurt on matchday one, before sharing the points in a goalless stalemate with Ludogorets three weeks ago.
Plzen lost just one of their 17 competitive matches across all competitions so far this season and currently sit third in the Czech First League with 24 points from 11 games, most recently beating Banik Ostrava 3-1 away from home last weekend.
Furthermore, Plzen have surprisningly not lost in 90 minutes in any of their last 22 matches in all European competitions, including qualifiers. However, their Europa League away form is less impressive, as they will travel to Greece on Thursday having won just three of their last 18 such games.
