Oxford United vs Arsenal Match Analysis & Prediction

09/01/2023 11:00 pm
On Monday, Arsenal begins their quest for a record-extending 15th FA Cup title when they travel to the Kassam Stadium to face League One side Oxford United.
The Gunners suffered a third-round exit at the hands of Nottingham Forest last year, while the U’s were dumped out in round one by Bristol Rovers.
Oxford United will be looking to cause a cup upset as they prepare to face Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup.
The League One outfit has already seen off Woking and Exeter City to set up a glamorous third-round clash with their Premier League opponents and is yet to lift the illustrious trophy.
But have progressed beyond the third round in three of the last six seasons – getting as far as the fifth round in 2016-17 before being eliminated by Middlesbrough.
However, Oxford’s only win from their last eight FA Cup ties against Premier League opposition came against Swansea City in the 2015-16 third round. Their recent form may not inspire confidence within Karl Robinson’s ranks, with just one win from their last five in all tournaments.
In a Premier League match on Tuesday, Arsenal hosted third-placed Newcastle United. The Gunners could have come away from the contest with a 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
Instead, they departed with their lead cut back to five points and an FA charge to their name after neither a handball against Jacob Murphy nor a perceived tug on Gabriel Magalhaes by Dan Burn resulted in a penalty.

Oxford United Team News
Injuries have left Oxford United short of options in the final third of the pitch. Kyle Joseph and Sam Baldock are both sidelined with ankle injuries, while Marcus Browne is expected to miss several more weeks with a hamstring injury.
Matty Taylor or Gatlin O’Donkor will lead an attack depleted by injury, and Brandon Fleming could be handed his debut after joining on loan from Hull City this month.

Arsenal Team News
Arsenal is hopeful that Emile Smith Rowe will be able to make his first appearance since September as the club’s record signing prepares to battle back from groin surgery.
Smith Rowe is unlikely to start, though, as the Gunners prepare to ring the changes ahead of next weekend’s North London derby with Tottenham Hotspur, starting with Matt Turner replacing Aaron Ramsdale in goal.
