Newport County vs Derby County Match Analysis & Prediction
15/11/2022 6:00 pm
League One outfit Derby County make a trip across the Severn Bridge to face League Two side Newport County in the FA Cup second round at Rodney Parade on Sunday.
The Rams take on a Newport side who have a strong reputation of making the third round of the FA Cup, and Derby may well have their work cut out at the weekend.
Newport’s recent history in this competition has provided much invigoration for fans of the historic tournament, and Rodney Parade has played host to some of the biggest sides in English football in the last four years alone.
The Exiles knocked out the likes of Leeds United, Leicester City and Middlesbrough in the Cup under the tutelage of Mike Flynn, as well as holding Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton to draws, all at home on the coast.
Few lower-league clubs have been quite as successful in the FA Cup as Newport, and despite Flynne having since departed, the freshly appointed manager Graham Coughlan will be looking to reignite Rodney Parade’s vibrant atmosphere on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Derby County enter the contest with the confidence of a side fighting for promotion to the Championship, sitting eighth in League One, and have not lost a league game since mid-October’s defeat to second-placed Ipswich Town.
Now under head coach Paul Warne, the Rams have been looking to put the misery of administration, points deduction and relegation from the Championship well behind them.
Warne’s form since his arrival has certainly been positive, but a lack of goals and decisive victories for Derby represent the hangover they have been facing since being relegated in May.
Victory in the FA Cup this weekend will be hard to come by against a Newport County side full of experienced players, against whom the young Rams may be ill-prepared.
