Newcastle United vs Manchester United Match Analysis & Prediction

In a repeat of February’s EFL Cup final, top-four rivals Newcastle United and Manchester United renew hostilities at St James’ Park in Sunday evening’s Premier League clash.
Only two places and three points separate the two teams in the standings, as the Red Devils sit third while the Magpies occupy fifth place.
Newcastle’s Champions League destiny is in their own hands heading into the final straight, largely through Tottenham Hotspur’s abysmal period as well as their upturn in fortunes just before the international break.
With no wins from five matches between February and the beginning of March, Newcastle were not feeling the love during the Valentine’s period, but Eddie Howe’s crop picked up a pair of 2-1 victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest to reignite their glimmer of hope.
From a team that kept clean sheets for fun to one that have conceded in their last eight matches acros all competitions, the Magpies are not the defensive force that they once were during the earlier stages of the campaign, and just two of their last five Premier League home games have ended in victory.
However, only Liverpool have got the better of Newcastle on their own turd this season – and even then the 10 men of Howe’s side gave the Reds quite the run for their money – so Manchester United must still have their wits about them against a Magpies side with an overriding desire for vengeance.
Premier League endeavours arguably took a back seat for Manchester United just before the international break, as the Red Devils came up trumps in their battles for Europa League and FA Cup supremacy against Real Betis and Fulham respectively.
Dreams of a quadruple are surely too far-fetched for Manchester United, who played just twice in the Premier League in March – that 7-0 defeat to Liverpool and a goalless draw with Southampton – leaving them safely in third place and one point clear of Tottenham, who have played two games more.
While Newcastle have lost their defensive sparkle, Manchester United hold the fourth-worst defensive record on the road this season, with their total of 27 goals conceded only better than Bournemouth (38), Nottingham Forest (32) and Leicester City (30).

In the 154 previous meetings between these two teams across all competitions, Newcastle have claimed 36 victories while Manchester United have won 78, and they have drawn in 40. Manchester have scored 301 goals and conceded 219 in the process.

Miguel Almiron and Emil Krafth will not be at Howe’s disposal for Sunday’s game, while Ryan Fraser remains exiled as he trains with the U21s, but Joelinton is back from a two-game ban for accumulating 10 yellow cards.
Newcastle must assess a wealth of injury and illness doubts following the international break, with Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Allan Saint-Maximin and Anthony Gordon uncertain for the visit of Manchester United.

Manchester United Team News
Casemiro will serve the second of his four-game domestic ban for his sending off against Southampton, while Marcel Sabitzer will need assessment after sustaining a knock with Austria.
Anthony Martial could make his long-awaited comeback from a hip problem, although he will certainly start on the bench, while Raphael Varane’s knock should not keep him out of contention for this one either.
