Another Eddie Howe Bournemouth reunion commences on Tuesday, as Newcastle United and AFC Bournemouth return to competitive action in the fourth round of the EFL Cup at St James’ Park.
The Magpies defeated Crystal Palace on penalties to set up a last-16 tie with their visitors, who beat Everton 4-1 in the third round to set up a contest with their former leader.
Newcastle United prepare for a long-awaited return to competitive action, and the Magpies have only known how to win in the final few months of the calender year.
Howe’s side entered the World Cup break on a six-game winning run across all competitions, moving up to third in the Premier League table after winning each of their last five top-flight games, but the needed penalties to overcome Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup third round after a goalless draw.
Tranmere Rovers also lost to Newcastle in the second round of the EFL Cup, and two winter friendlies with Al Hilal and Rayo Callecano earlier this month ended in 5-0 and 2-1 victories for the Magpies respectively.
Everton cannot forget their last two trips to the Vitality Stadium quickly enough, as Bournemouth entered the World Cup break off the back of two dominant victories over the Merseyside club in the EFL Cup and Premier League respectively.
After progressing to the last 16 of the EFL Cup after a 4-1 victory over the Toffees, Bournemouth hosted Everton in the Premier League just four days later and recorded a three-goal win, as Jaidon Anthony, Marcus Tavernier and Kieffer Moore scored.
However, Christmas does not bring a welcoming fixture for Bournemouth, as they resume Premier League action away to Chelsea on December 27, and they travel to Newcastle having failed to win any of their last four away games, drawing two before suffering successive defeats to West Ham United and Leeds United.
Newcastle United vs. AFC Bournemouth Head to head
