New York City vs Orlando City Match Analysis & Prediction

21/09/2023 2:30 am

One of the hottest teams in MLS, Orlando City, will make the trip to Citi Field in Queens to face New York City FC on Thursday morning.
A goalless draw at the Hudson River Derby against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday kept NYCFC four points behind the Easter Conference playoff line, while Orlando City extended their unbeaten run in league play to six matches by winning 4-3 against the Columbus Crew.
One third of New York City’s victories in the 2023 MLS campaign (2/6) have come at Citi Field, although they have picked up just one point in their last three leagie matches played there, scoring only twice and conceding six times over that stretch.
Throughout the campaign, Nick Cushing’s side have struggled in the attacking third with so much talk about needing a number nine, but despite all of their signings during the previous transfer window, scoring continues to be a problem for them, with just three goals in their last six competitive matches.
New York City have only scored multiple times in four domestic home games this year, including twice at Citi Field, while they have suffered just one defeats in Queens against an Eastern Conference opponent in the regular season or playoffs (3-1 defeat to the Philadelphia Union in May 2023).
Meanwhile, Orlando have transformed from a side that for the longest time were just grinding out results to one who are now dictating the majority of their matches, while showing a lot more quality, scoring in eight of their last nine MLS affairs.
Oscar Pareja has orchestrated this transformation, with his side scoring 45 goals to this point of the domestic campaign – the third-most for this franchise in the MLS regular season – and with 50 points so far, they are just a point away from equalling their highest total set in 2021 and have six games left to try and set that record.
Fifteen of their 21 goals scored on the road in this competition have come in the final 45 minutes of a game, with the Lions leading the league in away victories this year (seven).
New York City vs. Orlando City Head to head
In the 26 previous meetings between these two teams, New York City have claimed eight victories while Orlando City have won 10, and they have drawn in eight. Orlando have scored 33 goals and conceded 43 in the process.
