Marseille vs Lorient Match Analysis & Prediction

Marseille will have to pick up themselves up from their Europa League semi-final exit when the play host to Lorient at Orange Velodrome for Sunday night’s Ligue 1 contest.
Following their Europa League exit, Jean-Louis Gasset’s side will now turn their attention to their final three league matches against Lorient, Reims and Le Havre as they aim to secure European qualification for next season.
Having picked up 44 points from 31 matches, Marseille are sitting in ninth position and five points adrift of sixth-placed Lens, who they beat 2-1 in their most recent Ligue 1 game to end a five-game winless run in the top flight.
Although they have a game in hand over the three teams above them, Marseille know that they can ill afford to drop points in their final three games, beginning with Sunday’s home contest against a Lorient side they have beaten in eight of their previous nine head-to-head encounters.
Meanwhile, Lorient are in a perilous position after losing each of their last six matches, including their recent 2-0 defeat to European hopefuls Lens.
Having failed to win any of their last eight matches, Lorient are languishing in 17th position in the league standings with just 26 points and six points adrift of 15th-placed Le Havre.
After shipping 63 goals in 32 matches, Les Merlus currently have the worst defensive record in the top flight, and while their vulnerable backline will be an obvious concern ahead of Sunday’s contest, they will also need to improve at the opposite end of the picth after failing to score in any of their last three games.
Marseille vs. Lorient Head to head
In the previous 35 meetings between these two teams, Marseille have claimed 20 victories while Lorient have won six, and they have drawn in nine. Lorient have scored 40 goals and conceded 65 in the process.
