Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest Match Analysis & Prediction

01/02/2023 11:00 pm

Nottingham Forest will attempt to stage an improbable comeback when they travel to Manchester United on Wednesday night. The Red Devils lead 3-0 from the first leg, and either Southampton or Newcastle United will await Erik ten Hag’s men at Wembley should they avoid a calamitous collapse here.
Despite failing to win either of their two most recent Premier League matches with Crystal Palace and Arsenal, Man United still posted a healthy first-leg advantage at Forest’s home ground.
Marcus Rashford scored in the sixth minute, Wout Weghorst scored in the 39th minute, and Bruno Fernandes scored in the 88th minute.
The Red Devils have won many trophies under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who replaced Jose Mourinho after he was fired.
Ten Hag is now potentially only 180 minutes away from clinching his first piece of silverware since becoming Ajax manager in 2017, and a domestic cup double is also possible.
Despite having a full weekend to recover from their embarrassing FA Cup defeat to Blackpool, Forest will find it difficult to overturn their three-goal deficit against Tricky Trees.
The home team has enjoyed a long-standing rivalry with Manchester United, and few members of the Forest faithful will be dreaming of a remarkable fightback on Wednesday night.
A semi-final exit would still mark Nottingham Forest’s best run in the EFL Cup for 31 years–but it would also cap off another season without any silverware for the steadily-improving visitors.

Manchester United did not come through their win over Reading unscathed. Christian Eriksen left the stadium on crutches after suffering an ankle injury and is not expected to be fit for the second leg. Eriksen joins Donny van de Beek, Axel Tuanzebe, Anthony Martial, and Diogo Dalot on the sidelines while Jadon Sancho’s participation is still up in the air as he adapts to team training again.

In eerily similar fashion to Eriksen, Nottingham Forest attacker Morgan Gibbs-White also left the field with an ankle problem in the first-leg loss to Manchester United. The extent of his injury is still unclear, but he is not expected to make a rapid recovery in time for Wednesday’s match. A well-occupied Forest treatment room also holds Moussa Niakhate, Giulian Biancone, and Taiwo Awoniyi.
