11/12/2022 3:30 pm
Manchester City Women are set to face their local rivals Manchester United Women in a Women’s Super League contest at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
While the Citizens have recorded nine successive victories across all competitions, the Red Devils have won seven of their eight league matches this season.
Manchester City are currently sitting in fourth place in the WSL, with three points separating them from the Red Devils, who occupy the third and final Champions League spot.
Gareth Taylor’s side claimed a 3-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend through goals from Julie Blakstad and Laura Coombs, alongside a Veatriki Sarri own goal.
The Citizens were in League Cup action during the week, and it proved to be another successful game, with strikes from Filippa Angeldal and Mary Fowler guiding them to a 2-0 victory away to Liverpool.
They will now attempt to claim a 10th straight victory across all competitions, and their home form suggests that they will be confident of taking all three points in the Manchester derby.
Including last season, Manchester City have won 10 and drawn one of their last 11 league matches, and they have also won all three of their previous home encounters with Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have lost just one of their eight league matches this season, which came against the reigning WSL champions Chelsea.
They responded to the 3-1 defeat to the Blues with a 3-2 away victory over Arsenal, before they cruised to a comfortable win against Aston Villa last weekend.
Goals from Katie Zelem, Leah Galton, Alessia Russo, Ona Batlle and Rachel Williams helped Manchester United claim a 5-0 victory over the Villans.
Although the Red Devils recorded a third straight victory across all competitions during the week, a 4-2 win over Everton was not enough for Manchester United to progress from their League Cup group.
As they turn their attention to league action, Manchester United currently sit level on points with Arsenal and three points adrift of league leaders Chelsea wih a game in hand, and they will be looking to keep pace at the top with a victory on Sunday.
