An early first-place tie in Group H of CAF World Cup qualifying takes place on Tuesday at Bingu National Stadium as Malawi host Tunisia.
Both teams kicked off the qualification campaign on the right foot, with Malawi beating Liberia 1-0 while Tunisia claimed a 4-0 victory at home to Sao Tome and Principe.
For a second successive game, Malawi rescued themselves in the latter stages, scoring in the 78th minute on Friday, winning their opening match of a qualification campaign for the first time since the 2010 season.
Malawi remain unbeaten in normal time since Patrick Mabedi became the caketaker manager in June, with their previous victory being his first away from home.
Tunisia’s quest to qualify for a third successive finals began positively, as they have not been beaten at home in a World Cup qualification tie since June 2008 (2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso).
That win on matchday one of qualifying ended a two-game losing run for this team after suffering defeats to South Korea (4-0) and Japan (2-0) in friendlies last month.
Since the start of 2022, three of the last four defeats suffered by Jalel Kadri’s side against African opposition have come outside of Tunisia.
