Mainz vs Union Berlin Match Analysis & Prediction
07/02/2024 8:30 pm
Bundesliga strugglers Mainz 05 and Union Berlin will meet at MEWA ARENA on Wednesday night, as they both seek three points to aid their survival hopes.
Defeats for either side last weekend left Main above bottom-placed Darmstadt only on goal difference, with Union sitting just six points above them.
Without a win in nine matches, Mainz last tasted victory against RB Leipzig in November, when Jan Siewart took charge of his first game as head coach of the club.
Following back-to-back 1-0 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen, the club’s 15-year stay in Bundesliga is in serious jeopardy, as they currently occupy 17th position in the league standings.
Having picked up just five points on home soil this season, Mainz have also scored the fewest home goals (six), so they will be desperate to improve that dismal record in Wednesday’s game-in-hand on several teams above them.
Given Mainz’s ongoing woes, Union Berlin may fancy doing the double over them this season, particularly as new manager Nenad Bjelica seems to have steadied the ship since being appointed in late November.
Since the departure of much-loved coach Urs Fischer, Die Eisernen have lost just two Bundesliga matches, after failing to take a single point from the previous nine.
Union Berlin were beaten by RB Leipzig in their first February match and remain in some danger, sitting just one place above the relegation playoff spot now occupied by Koln.
Mainz vs. Union Berlin Head to head
In the 15 previous meetings between these two teams, Mainz have claimed five victories while Union Berlin have won seven, and they have drawn in three. Union Berlin have scored 24 goals and conceded 16 in the process.
