Los Angeles vs Sporting KC Match Analysis & Prediction

26/09/2024 5:30 am

Searching for their first-ever US Open Cup title, Los Angeles FC take on Sporting Kansas City at BMO Stadium in the final of that tournament on Thursday.
An 83rd-minute penalty in their semi-final tie last month lifted Los Angeles to a 1-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders, while Sporting KC won 2-0 over Indy Eleven, progressing into the final of this competition for a fifth time.
Thursday will be the fifth time LAFC appear in the final of a major tournament since winning the league title in 2022, with Los Angeles losing their last four finals, including a 3-1 defeat to the Columbus Crew at this stage of the Leagues Cup last month.
Steve Cherundolo’s side have won their two home matches at this tournament by a combined margin of 6-1, including a 3-1 victory over New Mexico United in the quarter-finals.
In 22 matches across all competitions this season Los Angeles have secured 15 victories while suffering just two defeats.
Other than their 2022 MLS Western Conference final victory over Austin FC, Los Angeles have never won a competitive final in normal time, beating the Philadelphia Union on penalties in the 2022 MLS Cup final while losing four of their six appearances in the final of a major tournament after 90 minutes.
Meanwhile, Sporting KC had little trouble with Indy Eleven in the US Open Cup semi-finals, holding the visitors to just 29% possession throughout the game.
On Thursday, Sporting KC can equal Bethlehem Steel and Maccabee Los Angeles for the most US Open Cup title (five), with SKC securing four in their history.
Unlike Los Angeles, Sporting KC have been rather successful in the final of a major tournament, winning six of their seven cup final appearances, including all four of their US Open Cup finals.
Peter Vermes’ side are winless in their last five matches on their travels across all competitions, four of which ended in a defeat for his side.
