Los Angeles vs SJ Earthquakes Match Analysis & Prediction
14/08/2024 5:30 am
California rivals Los Angeles FC and the San Jose Earthquakes will battle for a spot in the Leagues Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday at BMO Stadium.
The Black and Gold progressed to the round of 16 through a 2-0 victory over Austin FC, while the Quakes thrashed Necaxa 5-0.
Steve Cherundolo’s side have never lost a Leagues Cup match in Los Angeles, winning all of their knockout stage games played at BMO Stadium last season by a combined scoreline of 11-1.
Their round-of-32 triumph ended their three-game winless run for them across all competitions at BMO Field against Major League Soccer opponents.
Los Angeles only dropped four points in the 2024 MLS regular season when scoring the opening goal, with that solitary defeat coming in Commerce City against the Colorado Rapids in late March (3-2).
LA have never lost to an MLS side in the knockout stage of this tournament, securing a comfortable 4-0 victory at home over Real Salt Lake at this same stage a year ago.
One of the most unexpected things that were seen in the Leagues Cup round of 32 was the SJ Earthquakes exposing Necaxa for five goals in a thorough beatdown at PayPal Park.
Even before an Alan Montes red card gave them a man advantage late in the opening half, the Goonies were already 4-0 up, scoring more goals on Friday that they had in their previous eight competitive games combined (four).
On Wednesday, Ian Russell has a chance to win successive matches for the first time since being named interim head coach in late June.
Russell has only posted two competitive victories since replacing Luchi Gonzalez, with his only win over an MLS opponents coming against the Chicago Fire in July (1-0).
Los Angeles vs. SJ Earthquakes Head to head
In the previous 19 meetings between these two teams, Los Angeles have claimed 10 victories while SJ Earthquakes have won eight, and they have drawn once. SJ Earthquakes have scored 31 goals and conceded 45 in the process.
