Los Angeles vs LA Galaxy Match Analysis & Prediction

17/09/2023 5:30 am

The final El Trafico derby of the 2023 MLS regular season will take place on Sunday morning, as Los Angeles FC host Los Angeles Galaxy at BMO Stadium.
A week ago, the Black and Gold suffered a third successive domestic defeat, 2-0 to the Portland Timbers as they remain a point behind the Seattle Sounders for second in the Western Conference, while LA Galaxy erased a two-goal deficit to salvage a 2-2 draw against St Louis City, moving them to within four points of a playoff berth.
Los Angeles are the third-highest scoring club in the West this year (40 goals), but have not been nearly as decisive in the attacking third of their three-game slump, scoring just twice over that stretch.
Even the fortress of BMO Stadium has not aided these players as much as we are used to, with this team losing their third of the campaign in their previous home games (3-1 to Inter Miami), which is one more loss than this club suffered at home during the previous regular season.
Eight of their nine defeats domestically this year have come when conceding multiple goals, winning on just two occasions in 2023 when doing so (3-2 victories over the Portland Timbers and Galaxy).
All of their regualr season defeats this year have come when Los Angeles have conceded the opening goal, while they have only won on one of those occasions (2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City).
The Galaxy are not going down without a fight, showing plenty of resilience last time out against the top team in the Western Conference, claiming their eight point of the season when trailing in the second half.
However, with just eight matches remaining and four teams to catch in the postseason battle, single points will be of little use to Greg Vanney’s side in their quest to make the playoffs on successive occasions for the first time since the run of eight consecutive appearances from 2009-2016.
Half of their remaining matches take place away from home, where LA Galaxy have only succeeded twice all year, although they have only suffered one defeat in their last six away matches, with their previous game on the road ending in a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes.
Los Angeles vs. LA Galaxy Head to head
In the 20 previous meetings between these two teams, Los Angeles have claimed six victories while LA Galaxy have won nine, and they have drawn in five. LA Galaxy have scored 44 goals and conceded 41 in the process.
