Japan will be looking to secure a third successive victory in AFC World Cup qualifying when they welcome North Koreat to the Japan National Stadium on Thursday.
Although North Korea head into this contest as clear underdogs, they sit in second place in Group B ahead of reaching the halfway point of the second round.
Japan went into the recent Asian Cup with high hopes of winning the competition, attempting to end a 12-year wait since their last success, but a disapoointing quarter-final exit soon followed.
On a positive note, Hajime Moriyasu’s side are able to quickly turn their attention back to AFC World Cup qualifying action, where Japan already have a stranglehold of Group B.
Successive 5-0 wins have been recorded over Myanmar and Syria, and overcoming North Korea on Thursdya would effectively put Japan on the brink of progressing to the next stage.
Having spent so long in the international wilderness, there was a curiosity as to how North Korea would perform when participating at this stage.
The 1-0 defeat to Syria was a disappointment, although not a complete surprise, but bouncing back with a 6-1 victory in Myanmar has kick-started their efforts to join Japan in the next round.

Korea DPR Team News
Sin Yong-nam is able to select the same players that started North Korea’s 6-1 win in Myanmar, so it would come as little surprise if he stuck with the same team.
Jong Il-gwan scored a hat-trick on that occasion, taking him to 29 international goals, but North Korea will hope that frontline striker Han Kwang-song can add to his two strikes from 12 matches.
