High-flying Hearts play host to Hibernian at Tynecastle Park on Monday, as the two sides will kick off 2023 with a fiercely-fought Edinburgh derby.
While the hosts got the better of St Johnstone in midweek, the visitors were beaten by Celtic to fall five points adrify of their neighbours.
Hearts are currently sitting in third place in the Scottish Premiership table, holding a three-point advantage over fourth-placed Aberdeen, who have played a game more.
With Celtic and Rangers disappearing into the distance, winning the race to finish behind the Glasgow giants would secure guaranteed European football next season, after Hearts exited the Europa Conference League at the group stage this season.
A run of eight defeats from 10 league matches has put Lee Johnston’s future at Hibernian in some jeopardy over recent weeks, and any light at the end of the tunnel following a 4-0 victory on Christmas Eve was soon blotted out by Celtic on Wednesday.
Entering 2023 occupying eighth in the Premiership standings ahead of their trip to Tynecastle, Hibernian are without a derby victory in seven attempts.
Johnson’s first Edinburgh derby may have ended level through Boyle’s last-gasp heroics, but his side have won just twice on the road so far this season and they now tackle one of their toughst tests of the campaign with confidence at a low.
