14/08/2024 1:00 am
The first all-Brazilian encounter in the Copa Libertadores round of 16 this year will see Gremio and Fluminense meet in the opening leg of that tie on Wednesday at Estadio Major Antonio Couto Pereira in Porto Alegre.
Gremio played out a 1-1 draw in their final group match against Estudiantes to finish second, while the defending champions topped Group A, winning their last Libertadores game 3-2 over Alianza Lima.
Wednesday will be Gremio’s first Libertadores knockout match since the 2020 campaign, when they made the quarter-finals and were eliminated by fellow Brazilian side Santos 5-2 on aggregate.
Renato Gaucho’s side progressed beyond the last 16 in their previous four appearances at this stage, winning four successive home matches in this phase.
Meanwhile, Fluminense are unbeaten in 11 successive knockout matches at this tournament, with their last Libertadores defeat in the knockout phase coming in the 2013 quarter-finals against Olimpia (2-1).
Mano Menezes’ side are on a two-game losing run away from home across all competitions, suffering a 2-0 defeat domestically at Vasco da Gama on Sunday.
Their dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Internacional in the second leg of their Libertadores semi-final tie last year was the first time since 1971 (2-0 win over Palmeiras) that they beat a Brazilian opponent in this competition away from home.
