Gremio vs Corinthians Match Analysis & Prediction
08/08/2024 3:30 am
Gremio and Corinthians have everything to play for in Thursday’s Copa do Brasil round of 16 second leg when they meet at Estadio Major Antonio Couto Pereira.
The evenly-matches teams will fight for a spot in the quarter-finals after playing out a goalless draw in last week’s first leg in Sao Paulo.
Gremio’s goalless draw with Corinthians last week was the only last-16 first-leg tie that ended with neither side scoring, but it could have gone differently for Renato Gaucho’s side had Mathias Villasanti or Matias Arezo converted their clear-cut chances.
Gremio have reason to be optimistic here, having turned the tide with their ongoing five-game unbeaten run across all competitions (three wins) and three-match winning streak in front of their fans.
They have secured wins over Operario (3-1) in the cup, and two Brasileiro successes over Vitoria (2-0) and Vasco da Gama (1-0) without conceding should motivate the 2016 cup winners to make it four successive victories in Porto Alegre.
Gaucho was in situ when Imortal Tricolor last won the domestic cup, and the experienced manager hopes to bring the trophy back to Arena do Gremio.
That ultimately is still far from becoming a reality for the hosts, who must overcome the threat of Corinthians to progress into the last eight.
Corinthians’ form gives little reason to be confident, as they have gome four matches without success since securing back-to-back league victories over Criciuma (2-1) and Bahia (1-0) in July.
While just one defeat has been suffered in that period – 2-1 loss at Atletico Mineiro at the end of last month – playing out ties in league and cup against Gremio and Juventude point to a team currently without what it takes to play matches on its terms.
Ramon Diaz is looking for a much-improved performance from his side as Corinthians aim to snap their winless run following a series of disappointing results.
Gremio vs. Corinthians Head to head
In the previous 47 meetings between these two teams, Gremio have claimed 18 victories while Corinthians have won 15, and they have drawn in 14. Corinthians have scored 41 goals and conceded 57 in the process.
