Germany begins their World Cup 2022 campaign with a Group E clash against Japan at the Khalifa International Stadium on Wednesday, seeking to consign memories of Russia 2018 to history. Japan’s Takashi Inui scored a stunning first-half goal to put the Samurai Blue ahead against Belgium, but the Red Devils struck three times in a devastating 20-minute spell to knock Japan out of the 2018 World Cup.
Japan has made several early exits from the World Cup in their six previous tournaments since 1998 and don’t look likely to go any further than the last 16 this time, although they did win all 18 of their qualifying games and score 58 goals in the process.
They lost 2-1 to Canada in their friendly before their opening encounter with Colombia, and they have only won five games from 21 attempts in World Cup finals matches.
