The first of two all-Brazil quarter-final ties in the Copa Libertadores is set to get underway on Thursday with Fluminense facing Atletico Mineiro at Estadio Jornalista Mario Filho.
Fluminense got through to the last eight by overcoming Gremio on penalties in the round of 16, while Atletico Mineiro beat Argentine Primera Division side San Lorenzo 2-1 on aggregate.
After a memorable last season, which saw them win the Copa Libertadores for the first time in the club’s history, Fluminense have endured a significant drop off this season.
Their turbulent season led to the club sacking Fernando Diniz after two years at the helm, with Mano Menezes brought in to steady the ship, and under his stewardship there has been some improvement noted, with the new manager posting a record of seven wins, four draws and five losses in his first 16 games in charge.
Fluminense did lose their first game back from the international breat, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Juventude after taking a 1-0 lead, ending a four-game unbeaten run across all competitions in the process.
Atletico Mineiro also underwent a change of leadership this season, with the team bidding farewell to Luiz Felipe Scolari at the start of the season and replacing him with Argentine Gabriel Milito.
While not as severe as Fluminense’s league capitulation, Mineiro have also endured a notable dip in form this season, currently in 10th position in Brasileiro after finishing third in the last standings in the previous campaign.
In the group stages of this competition, they managed a record of three wins, one draw and two losses to qualify for the knockouts alongside Athletico Paranaense, before getting by San Lorenzo with a 1-0 victory in their home leg in the round of 16.
However, since the international break, Mineiro are yet to find their rhythm, drawing goalless in the Copa do Brasil with Sao Paulo before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Bahia in the league last time out.

In the previous 48 meetings between these two teams, Fluminense have claimed 13 victories while Mineiro have won 19, and they have drawn in 16. Mineiro have scored 72 goals and conceded 61 in the process.

Fluminense are set to be without the services of three players for this match with Lele, Diogo Barbosa and Ignacio all ruled out due to injury.
Jhon Arias has been in excellent form for the club, scoring in three of their last four matches, and he should almost certainly start alongside Kaua Elias as part of the two-man frontline here.
