Two teams involved in battles at opposite ends of the League One standings will meet at Highbury Stadium on Boxing day, as Fleetwood Town face Sheffield Wednesday.
While the hosts sit six points clear of the relegation zone after the postponement of their game last weekend, the visitors remain just outside of the automatic promotion spots following three successive draws.
Fleetwood experienced a relatively slow start to the League One season, as back-to-back defeats in mid-October left them on 16 points from 14 matches, but they have since enjoyed a noticeable improvement, adding a further 10 to their tally in seven more games.
They have suffered just one defeat in that period, a narrow 2-1 loss at home to Bolton Wanderers, but they bounced back with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town at the beginning of December.
Scott Brown’s side then travelled to MK Dons and again scored a decisive late goal, as Daniel Batty found the target in the 90th minute to seal a 2-1 victory after Carl Johnston had drawn them level 20 minutes from time.
Sheffield Wednesday enjoyed a perticularly impressive start to the season in League One, and while they have rarely occupied a place in the top two, they have consistently kept pace with leaders Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich.
Darren Moore’s side have collected 40 points from their opening 19 matches partly through three straight victories, including a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town at Hillsborough in mid-November, but they failed to extend the run any further in the following game away at Derby County as the contest ended in a draw.
While the Owls may not have impressed by their ow standards in recent weeks, they do remain just two points outside of the top two after Ipswich’s defeat last time out, and the consecutive stalemates have taken an unbeaten run in the league to 10 matches, having lost just three League One games all season.
Sheffield Wednesday will now focus on returning to winning ways on Monday with the chance to leapfrog the Tractor Boys and climb into the top two with a victory if other results go their way.
