FC Utrecht vs SBV Excelsior Match Analysis & Prediction
25/01/2023 11:00 pm
FC Utrecht play host to SBV Excelsior at the Stadion Galgenwaard on Wednesday looking to keep in close proximity to the top six in the Eredivisie standings.
At a time when the hosts occupy eighth place in the table, the visitors are 11th, although seven points adrift of their upcoming opponents.
After recording four successive victories before the World Cup, Utrecht have lost momentum and three matches have passed by without them getting another win on the board.
Although drawing with leaders Feyenoord was perceived to be a point gained – despite conceding a last-gasp equaliser- losing at FC Twente at the weekend was a significant blow to their hopes of remaining in the hunt for the European spots.
Michael Silberbauer’s side are on their worst run since August and the pressure is rising as they bid to show that they can remain in the top half of the table.
With AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven to come before the end of February, Utrecht need to take advantage of matches such as this Wednesday’s contest.
Meanwhile, maintaining their status in the top flight in their first season back remains the primary objective for Excelsior, and it has become increasingly likely that they will achieve that goal.
Victories over FC Groningen and FC Volendam have been posted since the resumption, moving the club into 11th place and seven points clear of the bottom three.
For a team that finished in sixth place in the second tier during 2021-22, it is a huge achievement so far, but Ajax and AZ are to come in two of their next three matches after Wednesday’s contest.
That highlights the need for Marinus Dijkhuizen’s side to keep pushing, and they need to change somehing on their away matches having collected just four points from nine away games.
FC Utrecht vs. SBV Excelsior Head to head
In the 21 previous meetings between these two sides, Utrecht have claimed 12 victories while Excelsior have won two, and they have drawn in seven. Excelsior have scored 25 goals and conceded 40 in the process.
