FC Nurnberg vs Fortuna Dusseldorf Match Analysis & Prediction

Two Bundesliga 2 sides meet in the last 16 of the DFB Pokal as FC Nurnberg host Fortuna Dusseldorf at Max-Morlock-Stadion on Wednesday.
The hosts are currently involved in a relegation battle in the second tier, while their visitors are looking to hunt down the top three as they seek promotion this season.
Since relegation from the Bundesliga in the 2018-19 campaign, Nurnberg have never seemed like returning to the top flight of German football.
Promotion is not even on the cards this season, with Nurnberg currently 16th in the league standings, a spot that would mean a relegation playoff at the end of the campaign.
Markus Weinzierl’s side have lost both of their league matches since returning from the World Cup break, suffering a 1-0 defeats to St Pauli and Greuther Furth.
Nurnberg have found the DFB Pokal to be a welcome distraction this season, although a very rare distraction, with Weinzierl’s side beating third-tier Waldhof Mannheim in the last round of the competition.
Fortuna Dusseldorf have more of a recent history with the Bundesliga, and also a greater chance of reaching those heights once again in the near future, with Daniel Thioune’s side currently sixth in the second tier.
However, Dusseldorf come into this cup tie off the back of their heaviest defeat of the season, losing 4-1 to promotion-chasing Paderborn on Friday at Home Deluxe Arena.
Thioune’s side managed to win this competition twice in the 1970s and impressively reached the final in three successive years between 1978 and 1980.
