FC Groningen vs SC Cambuur Match Analysis & Prediction
26/01/2023 8:45 pm
Two of the huge favourites for relegation from the Eredivisie this season meet on Thursday, when FC Groningen play host to SC Cambuur at the Euroborg.
Groningen have failed to pick up a single point from their last five matches, while Cambuur have won just one of their last eight.
Both teams are also reeling from being eliminated from the KNVB Beker by amateur sides from the Tweede Divisie just over a week ago – the Dutch third tier that has no promotion to the professional leagues.
Groningen have succeeded on just three occasions all season, one of them being against PSV, but another was in the reverse fixture back in September when they won 1-0 in Leeuwarden.
They have since lost six on the bounce across all competitions, including that disappointing defeat at home to amateurs Spakenburg, who won 3-0 at one stage in the cup.
Sacking manager Frank Wormuth during the World Cup break and bringing in Dennis van der Ree until the end of the season has made no positive impact to Groningen at all, as he has lost all four matches in charge.
Sjors Ultee has suffered a similar fate since being brought in during the break to Cambuur, replacing Henk de Jong who had to step away from football for health reasons towards the end of 2022.
Cambuur are still rooted to the bottom of the Eredivisie table, but the poor form of the sides around them means they are still well in touch of safety.
It is now approaching four months since their last victory, a 3-0 win over PSV which remains the only points they have picked up at home all season.
Eight defeats from nine at the Cambuur Stadion means that they may actually favour being away from home here, as they have only lost four of their eight away matches.
FC Groningen vs. SC Cambuur Head to head
In the 13 previous meetings between these two sides, Groningen have claimed five victories while Cambuur have won three, and they have drawn in five. They have each scored 21 goals in the process.
